The Punisher (Netflix)

The Punisher on Netflix continues the story of Frank Castle’s road to revenge. After an impressive portrayal of the character by Jon Bernthal in Daredevil season 2, I was looking forward to this one.

Bernthal does not disappoint. I enjoyed Castle’s ability to take out anyone and also the moments when he’s trying to cope with living without his family. There were good performances around but it was very easy to pick out the villain early on in the series.

Although it was interesting for the show to explore what happens to veterans, I don’t think they should’ve been the bad guys. Ok so not all of them are, but many of the people Frank kills are ex-military turned mercenary. Now, I don’t know much about the Punisher, but I thought he goes around “punishing” criminals. I thought the story was going to work towards that. The show, however, renews his family revenge arc and says “it wasn’t only the gangs who killed your family, it was planned!”. So this double dipping makes it feel familiar and less effective. But then I don’t really see a deep story to Frank Castle, his family was killed so he’s now a vigilante who kills criminals. I don’t know how to make that interesting.

The Punisher is missing that “hall”mark fight scene that every Marvel Netflix series has included. It does have many action scenes and yes they were good, but none of them really “stood out”. Unlike the corridor fight scene in Daredevil season 1. This series however, is very brutal. It’s very violent. It fits with the characters theme but some of the things were so horrible, I cringed. This is coming from a guy who watch horror movies!

I like Bernthal’s Frank Castle and would like to see him return. However, if the next one is pretty much like this season, then I’d rather see him as a guest character in one of the other shows. Or give him a good reason to start going after bad guys again.

The Punisher is good, but doesn’t quite reach great. I would recommend this to fans of the other shows (especially Daredevil season 2 fans) and maybe to people who just want a nice contained story about an ex-military dude going around killing people.
