The Last Jedi – a movie for fans

Star Wars The Last Jedi is a movie for Star Wars fans. I’m convinced of this because I only thought it was an average movie but fans seen to think it’s the best thing ever.

The visuals are really good. But that doesn’t make a movie, not this kind anyway. Throughout the movie I was waiting for something fun to happen. The Last Jedi does try to be funny, but it tries so hard that I found myself barely reacting to most of it.

The most distracting thing about The Last Jedi is I couldn’t really make sense of things. Like, if Finn and Rose are able to use a spaceship to go to a random planet without being detected by The First Order, why didn’t they just do that in the first place? Also, it took them so much time to find a hacker and then execute the mission, you have to wonder just how much fuel they have left and whether it’s enough to do a hyper speed jump. Can Jedi or people who can use the force really survive in space like Leia? Who designed the useless space bombers where you have to go up to your targets forehead to use (hoping that the turrets have all been taken out prior)? Is 2x 2 hour training sessions really enough to be a Jedi? The greatest offender is the fact that the First Order seemed contempt to waste time and let the resistance run away. Well, it was a “chase” scene that seemed to be moving at 5 mph.

The pacing of the movie was awfully slow too. I liked the Force Awakening and definitely prefer it to this movie. It was funnier, lighter and all about having fun.

All the characters fell really flat this time around. I liked Rei in The Force Awakening, but here, she doesn’t really stand out any more. Finn was basically forced into the movie. The casino arc just doesn’t make sense and if it weren’t for that, he would have zero things to do. The movie also manages to crowbar Captain Phasma in. It felt like she was there because people complained she didn’t do much in the first movie so she had to be in this one and do more. Benicio Del Toro just outclasses everyone in this movie. His part is minimal and screen time limited, but he just made the most of his character and that was enough for me to think he was the best thing about this movie.

Overall, I thought it was a good movie. I would give The Last Jedi 2.25 stars out of 5 if I had such a system in place. I wouldn’t really recommend this movie to people unless they want to see some awesome special effects or that they’re huge Star Wars fan. Oh and of course if they want to be involved with one of the bigger movies of the year (because Star Wars).
